Master's Level Certified Addiction Professional (MCAP)
The Master's Level Certified Addiction Professional (MCAP) is the most advanced addiction-specific credential within the FCB's behavioral health portfolio. It is designed for clinicians holding graduate degrees who operate within licensed substance use disorder treatment programs or community mental health centers. The MCAP reflects advanced competency in performing complex clinical evaluations, comprehensive treatment planning, individual and group counseling, and clinical supervision in an agency setting. For initial certification, MCAP applicants must complete 161 hours of graduate-level training spread across eight performance domains: Understanding Addiction Knowledge (31 hours), Counseling (30 hours), Ethical and Professional Responsibilities (30 hours), Clinical Evaluation (25 hours), Treatment Planning (15 hours), Case Management and Referral (10 hours), Client, Family, and Community Education (10 hours), and Documentation (10 hours). Applicants who already hold a valid CAP credential in good standing are only required to complete a 20-hour upgrade training track, consisting of 16 hours of Supervision, 4 hours of HIV/AIDS, and 2 hours of Domestic Violence.MCAPs are recognized as Qualified Professionals and hold the practice rights defined in Chapter 397, Florida Statutes. It's important to note that the MCAP designation does not allow for independent private practice unless the practitioner also holds a corresponding Florida license in a counseling discipline, such as an LMHC or LCSW. MCAPs are exclusively authorized to work within licensed substance use disorder treatment agencies or community mental health centers. While MCAPs can make diagnostic impressions and social considerations regarding substance use, they may not dispense or prescribe medications. The MCAP credential must be renewed annually by June 30th, with renewal requiring 20 Continuing Education (CE) hours each year that directly relate to one or more of the MCAP performance domains. In accordance with Florida Certification Board (FCB) standards, our training is delivered exclusively via compliant self-paced online courses; "homestudy" formats are no longer accepted. To successfully verify learning and earn a certificate of completion, participants must pass a post-test with a minimum score of 70% and complete a Level One evaluation (attitude questionnaire) assessing course satisfaction, relevance, and presenter knowledge.
