This course equips the CRPS to integrate Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) into their practice, enhancing safety and effectiveness by adopting the paradigm shift from asking, "What’s wrong with you?" to "What happened to you?". Participants gain a foundational understanding of trauma prevalence (such as the ACE Study findings) and the neurobiology of survival. The training covers the Self-Medication Hypothesis, which reframes substance use as a biologically specific attempt to cope with overwhelming emotional distress, thereby reducing shame. Emphasis is placed on modeling the SAMHSA Six Guiding Principles (Safety, Trustworthiness, Peer Support, Collaboration, Empowerment, Cultural Issues) to actively resist re-traumatization, as trauma survivors have often experienced powerlessness. Practical skills include applying the 3 R's Framework (Realize, Recognize, Respond), implementing Universal Precautions (assuming everyone has a trauma history), and utilizing immediate grounding techniques (like the 5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Focus) to stabilize peers who are outside their Window of Tolerance. The course concludes by addressing the ethical imperative of managing Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) and Compassion Fatigue (CF), which pose unique risks to peer professionals due to shared experience.
