Motivational Interviewing in Planning is a 10-hour continuing education course for Certified Mental Health Professionals (CMHPs) who help people build and carry out service plans. Many people come to planning conversations feeling two ways about change, and plans written for them rather than with them often stall. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, evidence-based conversation style for strengthening a person's own motivation and commitment to change. This course teaches the spirit of MI, its four processes, the core OARS skills, how to recognize and strengthen change talk, how to respond to sustain talk and discord, and how to move from motivation to a concrete, person-owned plan, all within the CMHP role of supporting plans that licensed clinicians approve.
