This comprehensive 6-clock-hour training addresses the complex clinical reality of Co-Occurring Disorders (COD), where substance use and mental health disorders exist simultaneously. Designed for Pennsylvania counselors, marriage and family therapists, and social workers (LPC, LMFT, LCSW, LSW, and LBSW), this home study course moves beyond the "siloed" treatment approach to an Integrated Treatment model. Participants will explore the etiology of comorbidity, differential diagnosis using DSM-5-TR criteria, and treatment plans that address both conditions concurrently. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based interventions such as Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), applies the Pennsylvania Board regulations (49 Pa. Code Chapters 47, 48, and 49) on scope of practice, records, technology, and confidentiality, explains how licensed clinicians collaborate with drug and alcohol programs licensed by the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), and covers Pennsylvania drug and alcohol and mental health confidentiality law alongside the federal privacy requirements of HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
This course is designed around the continuing education requirements of the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors but is not approved or endorsed by the Board. Dr. Paulson Professional Counseling LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7987. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified.
