Oregon CE Requirements and Courses for LPCs and LMFTs

Here’s what the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists asks of LPCs and LMFTs at renewal, and the courses I built around each requirement.

Next renewal: the last day of your birth month in your renewal year. Oregon licenses renew every 2 years. Even-numbered licenses renew in even years and odd-numbered licenses in odd years. Your hours are due by your renewal date.

Renewal requirements

Who this covers

  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT)

40 clock hours every 24 months

  • 6 clock hours in professional ethics and/or Oregon laws and rules. Ethics alone satisfies it.
  • 4 clock hours in cultural competency (ORS 676.850).
  • 2 clock hours in suicide risk assessment, treatment and management (ORS 676.866).
  • Supervisors of registered associates: 3 clock hours of supervision training.
  • All of these count within the 40 (OAR 833-080-0011).

Rules for every license

  • The Board doesn’t pre-approve courses or providers. A course counts when its content fits the program areas in OAR 833-080-0031.
  • Cultural competency doesn’t have to be OHA-approved. It should be the primary subject of the course, and the same hours can’t also count as ethics.
  • Home study has no hour cap (OAR 833-080-0041).
  • No grace period. Finish your hours before you renew. The Board audits at random each reporting year.
  • New licensees: no CE is due in the first period, which runs up to 12 months.
  • Keep your proof for 2 years after the reporting period (OAR 833-080-0051).
