Caffeine as a Modulator of Mood, Emotion, and Cognition (2 Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

Caffeine is the most widely used psychoactive substance in the world, yet it is often overlooked in mental health assessment. This course reviews how caffeine works in the brain and body, where clients get it, what current FDA, ACOG, and American Academy of Pediatrics guidance says about intake, and what research shows about its effects on mood, anxiety, panic, sleep, and cognitive performance, including the role of withdrawal in many of caffeine's apparent benefits.

The second module turns to clinical practice. Participants learn the DSM-5-TR caffeine-related diagnoses, the proposed criteria for caffeine use disorder, and practical tools for screening, brief motivational intervention, and gradual tapering. Special considerations for adolescents and for clients with anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders treated with clozapine, eating disorders, and pregnancy are addressed, along with documentation and appropriate coordination with medical providers. Florida case studies illustrate each skill.

This course is designed around the continuing education requirements of the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling but not approved or endorsed by the Board.
