Cultural Competency and Diversity in Behavioral Health Practice: New Jersey Edition (3 Contact Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

Cultural Competency and Diversity in Behavioral Health Practice is a three contact hour, text-based home study course for New Jersey licensed professional counselors and licensed associate counselors. The course explains core concepts including cultural humility, intersectionality, multicultural orientation, implicit bias, acculturation, and minority stress, and it reviews the ethical mandates of the ACA, NASW, APA, and NBCC codes and the evidence on disparities in behavioral health care. It then applies these ideas to culturally responsive assessment with the DSM-5-TR Cultural Formulation Interview, diagnostic accuracy, culturally adapted treatment, language access and work with interpreters, and considerations for specific populations. The final module addresses broaching, microaggressions and rupture repair, culturally responsive supervision, the National CLAS Standards, and advocacy.

The course is written for the 3 contact hours in social and cultural competence that New Jersey LPCs complete each biennial period under N.J.A.C. 13:34-15.2. It is designed around the continuing education requirements of the New Jersey Professional Counselor Examiners Committee but not approved or endorsed by the Committee.
