Ethics and Law for New Mexico Counselors, Part 1: Regulation, the Board Code, and Professional Practice (6 Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

This six hour, text-based home study course covers ethics and law for New Mexico counselors. All six hours are ethics content, and the course is Part 1 of a two-part series that together provides the 12 ethics hours New Mexico requires each renewal period.

Module 1 covers how New Mexico regulates counselors: the Counseling and Therapy Practice Act, the Board, license types, supervision, and renewal and continuing education. Module 2 covers the Board's own code of ethics (16.27.18 NMAC) and how it compares with the ACA Code. Module 3 covers ethical decision making. Module 4 covers complaints, investigations, and discipline. Module 5 covers confidentiality, privilege, records, and informed consent. Module 6 covers competence, supervision ethics, documentation, fees, and advertising. Each module includes a practical routine, a tool training, a skills practice, and New Mexico case studies.

This course is designed around the continuing education requirements of the New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board and is not approved or endorsed by the Board.
