Ethics for Maine Counseling Professionals (4 Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

This four hour, text-based home study course covers ethics and law for Maine licensed professional counselors, licensed clinical professional counselors, and conditional licensees. All four hours address the Board's code of ethics (02-514 CMR ch. 8-A).

Module 1 covers how Maine regulates counseling professionals: 32 M.R.S. chapter 119, the Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure, license types, supervision, and renewal and continuing education. Module 2 covers the Maine code of ethics in Chapter 8-A, complaints, and discipline. Module 3 covers confidentiality and privilege, Maine's duty to warn under 32 M.R.S. 13867, child and adult abuse reporting including the 2026 changes, and counseling minors. Module 4 covers boundaries, telehealth, Maine's 2025 law on artificial intelligence in counseling, rural and island practice, and the Counseling Compact. Each module includes a practical routine, a tool training, a skills practice, and Maine case studies. This course does not meet Maine's one-time 12-hour family and intimate partner violence training requirement.
