Healing Through Forgiveness: Research and Clinical Applications (4 Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

This course examines forgiveness as a subject of psychological research and as a clinical option for clients struggling with interpersonal injuries. It covers research definitions of forgiveness, what forgiveness is not, the major types of forgiveness, self-forgiveness and its counterfeits, Enright's process model, Worthington's REACH model, the correlates of forgiveness identified in meta-analysis, and widely used measures.

Participants review the evidence on anger, hostility, forgiveness, and health with attention to effect sizes and limitations, then apply the research to practice: assessing readiness, recognizing when forgiveness can be harmful, screening for safety, meeting abuse reporting duties, choosing intervention formats, and working with humility across cultural and spiritual traditions. Practical tools, sample client language, and Florida-based case studies support application in everyday practice.

This course is designed around the continuing education requirements of the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling but not approved or endorsed by the Board.
