New Jersey Ethics for Professional Counselors (5 Contact Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

This 5 contact hour home study course covers the ethical and legal standards that New Jersey licensed professional counselors and licensed associate counselors apply every day. Participants review how the Professional Counselor Examiners Committee licenses and disciplines counselors under the Professional Counselor Licensing Act and N.J.A.C. 13:34, and the continuing education rules for the November 30, 2026 renewal.

The course explains confidentiality and privilege under N.J.R.E. 534, the counselor records rules, HIPAA, and 42 CFR Part 2; the New Jersey duty to warn statute and the common law duty under McIntosh v. Milano; child abuse and vulnerable adult reporting; minors' consent at age 16; the counselor sexual misconduct rule; the New Jersey telehealth rules; the Counseling Compact; and the complaint process under the Uniform Enforcement Act. Each module has an information section, a practical section with a step by step tool, New Jersey case studies, and a summary.

This course is written for the 5 contact hours in ethical and legal standards required by N.J.A.C. 13:34-15.2. It does not satisfy the 3 contact hours in social and cultural competence or the 1 contact hour on prescription opioid drugs. The course is designed around the continuing education requirements of the New Jersey Professional Counselor Examiners Committee but not approved or endorsed by the Committee.

Save with a bundle. This course is included in my New Jersey 40-Hour Full Renewal Bundle (40 contact hours, $59) and New Jersey Required Renewal Bundle (9 contact hours, $29). See my New Jersey CE requirements guide for everything your renewal includes.
