Prescription Opioids for New Jersey Counselors: Risks, Misuse, Addiction, and Diversion (1 Contact Hour)

Overview
Curriculum

This 1 contact hour home study course covers prescription opioid drugs for New Jersey licensed professional counselors and licensed associate counselors: how opioids work, tolerance, dependence, and opioid use disorder; overdose risk, including fentanyl and combined use with benzodiazepines; the risks and signs of opioid misuse, addiction, and diversion; responsible prescribing standards under the CDC 2022 guideline and New Jersey's initial supply limit; nonopioid approaches to pain; medications for opioid use disorder; and naloxone access under the New Jersey standing order and the Overdose Prevention Act. The module includes a screening and referral routine using the TAPS Tool and New Jersey case studies.

This course is written for the 1 contact hour on prescription opioid drugs that New Jersey LPCs complete each biennial period (P.L. 2017, c.341; N.J.A.C. 13:34-15.2). It does not satisfy the ethics or social and cultural competence hours. The course is designed around the continuing education requirements of the New Jersey Professional Counselor Examiners Committee but not approved or endorsed by the Committee.
