Washington Law and Ethics for Mental Health Counselors (6 Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

This 6 hour home study course covers the law and ethics that Washington LMHCs and LMHC associates apply every day. Participants review how the Department of Health regulates counselors under RCW 18.225, the Uniform Disciplinary Act, and WAC 246-809, the CE and mandatory reporting rules, confidentiality and records under RCW 70.02 and RCW 18.225.105, why an attorney's subpoena is not enough for mental health records, the broad duty to protect recognized in Volk v. DeMeerleer, extreme risk protection orders, child and vulnerable adult reporting, adolescent consent at age 13 and parent-initiated treatment, the counselor sexual misconduct rule that bars sexual contact with former clients with no time limit, disclosure statements, telehealth, the Counseling Compact, and the DOH complaint process. Each module has an information section, a practical section with a step by step tool, Washington case studies, and a summary.
