Wisconsin Ethics and Professional Boundaries for Counselors (4 Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

This 4 hour home study course covers professional ethics and boundaries for Wisconsin licensed professional counselors. Participants review how the Professional Counselor Section of the Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, and Social Work Examining Board and DSPS regulate counselors, the CE rules for the February 28, 2027 renewal, and how to respond to a DSPS complaint.

The course explains confidentiality and privilege under Wis. Stat. 51.30, 146.82, and 905.04, including why a subpoena not signed by a judge is not enough; the duty to warn under Schuster v. Altenberg and Wis. Stat. 51.17; child and adult at risk reporting; minors' consent and records; the MPSW 20 rules on dual relationships and sexual contact; sexual exploitation by a therapist under Wis. Stat. 940.22; and the Wisconsin telehealth rules. Each module has an information section, a practical section with a step by step tool, Wisconsin case studies, and a summary.

This course is written for the 4 hours in professional ethics and boundaries required by Wis. Admin. Code MPSW 19.02. It is designed around the continuing education requirements of the Wisconsin Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, and Social Work Examining Board but not approved or endorsed by the Board.
