Intimate partner violence affects millions of adults, and its effects, including depression, PTSD, anxiety, and substance use, often bring survivors to counseling without any mention of abuse. This course defines IPV using the current CDC framework, reviews the newest National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey data, and examines how culture, community, and structural inequities shape the way violence is named, disclosed, and addressed for immigrants, communities of color, LGBTQ+ people, men, older adults, and other groups. Participants learn private, interpreter-supported, behavior-based screening and the risk factors most strongly linked to intimate partner homicide, along with the structure and appropriate use of the Danger Assessment.
The second module focuses on intervention. Participants learn collaborative safety planning, community-based advocacy and trauma-focused therapies for survivors, culturally adapted approaches, the reasons conjoint couples therapy is generally contraindicated when coercive control is present, and counseling roles with people who use violence. Florida-specific content covers domestic violence and dating violence injunctions, firearm prohibitions, certified batterers' intervention programs, the Address Confidentiality Program, hotline resources, reporting and confidentiality duties, and safe documentation, illustrated through Florida case studies.
