Virginia Board of Counseling

Our Virginia courses are written for licensees of the Virginia Board of Counseling, including licensed professional counselors, residents in counseling, and marriage and family therapists. Licensed professional counselors complete 20 hours of continuing competency for each annual renewal by June 30, including at least 2 hours in courses that emphasize the ethics, standards of practice, or laws governing behavioral science professions in Virginia. Residents in counseling complete 3 such hours at each annual renewal. Virginia Law, Ethics, and Standards of Practice for Professional Counselors (3 hours) is built on the current Board of Counseling regulations and the Code of Virginia, including the duty to protect, mandated reporting, records, and boundaries. The Board lists courses from NBCC-approved providers among approved continuing competency activities, and Dr. Paulson Professional Counseling LLC is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP No. 7987). This course is designed around Board of Counseling requirements but is not approved or endorsed by the Board. Virginia licensees keep their certificates for two years after renewal in case of a Board audit.
