Ethics and Law for Iowa Mental Health Counselors (3 Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

This three hour, text-based home study course covers ethics and law for Iowa licensed mental health counselors and temporary licensees. All three hours are ethics content.

Module 1 covers how Iowa regulates mental health counselors: Iowa Code chapter 154D, the Board of Behavioral Health Professionals that replaced the Board of Behavioral Science, licensure and supervision, renewal and continuing education under the 481 IAC rules, the ACA Code as adopted by rule, and grounds for discipline and duties to report. Module 2 covers confidentiality, Iowa's duty to warn under Iowa Code 228.7A, child and dependent adult abuse reporting, and counseling minors. Module 3 covers applying the ACA Code with an ethical decision-making model, boundaries, social media, rural practice, telehealth, and the Counseling Compact. Each module includes a practical routine, a tool training, a skills practice, and Iowa case studies. This course does not meet Iowa's separate mandatory reporter training requirement, which uses a state-approved curriculum.

This course is designed around the continuing education requirements of the Iowa Board of Behavioral Health Professionals and is not approved or endorsed by the Board.
