This 3 contact hour home study course covers the ethical and legal standards that North Carolina LCMHCs, LCMHCAs, and LCMHCSs apply every day. Participants review how the Board regulates counselors under G.S. 90-329 et seq. and 21 NCAC 53, including its adoption of the ACA Code of Ethics with later editions; the renewal and CE rules; and how to respond to a Board complaint.
The course explains the counselor privilege in G.S. 8-53.8 and why a subpoena alone does not compel privileged records; the 2023 law requiring parental consent to treat minors (S.L. 2023-106); North Carolina's rejection of a Tarasoff duty in Gregory v. Kilbride and the HIPAA permission to disclose; child abuse reporting to county DSS and the separate 2019 duty to report crimes against juveniles; disabled adult reporting; boundaries and sexual exploitation; distance counseling; and the Counseling Compact. Each module has an information section, a practical section with a step by step tool, North Carolina case studies, and a summary.
The Board states that its jurisprudence examination satisfies the 3 hour ethics requirement; this course counts toward the 40 contact hours. It is designed around the continuing education requirements of the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors but not approved or endorsed by the Board.
Save with a bundle. This course is included in my North Carolina 40-Hour Full Renewal Bundle (40 contact hours, $59). See my North Carolina CE requirements guide for everything your renewal includes.
