Virginia Law, Ethics, and Standards of Practice for Professional Counselors is a three-hour, text-based home study course built on the current Regulations Governing the Practice of Professional Counseling and the Code of Virginia. The course covers the Board of Counseling's licensure, residency, supervision, renewal, and continuing competency rules, the standards of practice in 18VAC115-20-130, and the disciplinary process. It explains Virginia's health records privacy law, client access to records, minors' consent, the statutory duty to protect third parties, mandated reporting of child and adult abuse, the duty to inform clients of their right to report provider misconduct, and telehealth. It concludes with dual relationships, Virginia's five-year rule for former clients, informed consent, competence, supervision ethics, and ethical decision-making.
