Human Sexuality Across the Lifespan: The Role of Aging and Illness (2 Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

This course gives counselors a current, evidence-based foundation in human sexuality in later life. Module 1 reviews normal physiological changes with age, menopause and the genitourinary syndrome of menopause, age-related testosterone decline, common myths and ageist attitudes, the experiences of LGBTQ+ older adults, and sexual expression in long-term care, including capacity to consent when cognitive impairment is present and Florida's vulnerable adult reporting requirements.

Module 2 examines how cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, chronic pain, disability, depression, and medications such as SSRIs and long-term opioids affect sexual function and intimacy. It then focuses on the counselor's role: building comfort in talking about sex, structuring conversations with the PLISSIT and extended PLISSIT models, staying within scope, and referring to medical providers and certified sex therapists. This is a general human sexuality course and is not training in sex therapy.

This course is designed around the continuing education requirements of the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling but not approved or endorsed by the Board.
