California Supervisor Training and CE for LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs

Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) certification mark

Online supervisor training and continuing education accepted by the California BBS

The California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) recognizes the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as an approval agency for continuing education providers. As an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider, our online courses count toward CE for California LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs, and all 36 renewal hours may be completed online.

For supervisors: the ACS path

California requires new supervisors to complete 15 hours of supervision training within 60 days of starting to supervise, and 6 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) in supervision every renewal cycle. According to the BBS, a licensee who holds a valid and active approved supervisor certification from the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE) is exempt from both the 15-hour course and the 6-hour CPD requirement.

Our CCE-approved Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) 45-Hour Training Program completes the training portion of the ACS credential. CCE sets the remaining credential requirements (such as licensure, education, and supervision experience), and you apply to CCE directly.

For California supervisors: 6 hours of supervision training built on BBS rules

California Law, Ethics, and Documentation in Clinical Supervision (6 hours) is written specifically for California. It covers supervisor qualifications, the Supervision Agreement and self-assessment report due within 60 days, weekly supervision units, videoconference supervision, associate employment rules, mandated reporting and duty to protect when supervising associates, fair evaluation, and defensible supervision records. The BBS accepts supervision-specific training from an acceptable CE provider toward the 6-hour CPD requirement each renewal cycle, and these 6 hours can also count toward the 15-hour training required of new supervisors.

New supervisors can complete all 15 required hours with the California 15-Hour New Supervisor Training Package, which combines this course with Theoretical Frameworks and Models of Clinical Supervision (6 hours) and Culturally Responsive Clinical Supervision (3 hours).

For current supervisors: 6-hour supervision CPD

Legal and Ethical Issues and Responsibilities in Clinical Supervision (6 hours) is training specific to the topic of supervision from an acceptable CE provider, which the BBS accepts toward the 6-hour supervision CPD requirement each renewal cycle.

For all licensees: your 36-hour renewal

  • LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs complete 36 hours of CE every two years, including 6 hours of law and ethics each renewal.
  • Your renewal date is based on your individual license expiration date.
  • Our NBCC-approved online courses can be used toward the general hours, and California Law and Ethics for LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs (6 Hours) covers the 6 hours of law and ethics required each renewal.
  • Every licensee also completes a one-time 3-hour telehealth course that includes telehealth law and ethics. California Telehealth Law and Ethics (3 Hours) meets that requirement, and because all three hours cover law and ethics, they can also count toward the 6 hours of law and ethics.
  • Associates (AMFTs, ASWs, and APCCs) complete 3 hours of California law and ethics every registration renewal. California Law and Ethics for BBS Associates (3 Hours) is written for that requirement.
  • California does not use CE Broker. Keep your certificates for BBS audits.

For all licensees: the one-time 6-hour suicide requirement

The Board of Behavioral Sciences asks LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs to complete a one-time minimum of 6 hours in suicide risk assessment and intervention (Cal. Bus. and Prof. Code 4980.396, 4996.27, and 4999.66). Licensees complete it before their first renewal after January 1, 2021, and applicants on or after that date complete it before the license is issued. Hours taken as continuing education count toward your 36 hours only in the renewal cycle when you take them.

Suicide Risk Assessment and Intervention for California Clinicians (6 hours) covers screening with the ASQ, PHQ-9, C-SSRS, and SAFE-T, risk formulation, lethal means counseling and California firearm law, safety planning, 5150, minors’ consent, and care transitions. Written for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and BBS associates. Self-paced, $24. The course is designed around the suicide risk assessment and intervention requirement of the California Board of Behavioral Sciences but is not approved or endorsed by the Board.
