Chronic Pain Syndromes and Interventions: Treating the Whole Person (3 Hours)

Overview
Curriculum

This three-hour course prepares counselors, marriage and family therapists, and social workers to treat clients living with chronic pain as whole persons. It reviews current definitions and classification, including the 2020 IASP definition of pain, ICD-11 chronic primary pain, and nociplastic pain, along with the biopsychosocial and fear-avoidance models, current U.S. prevalence data, and common syndromes such as fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain, migraine, and complex regional pain syndrome.

The course then covers practical assessment, co-occurring depression, anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia, suicide risk, and opioid use in light of the CDC 2022 opioid prescribing guideline, followed by evidence-based psychological and integrative interventions. Case studies set in Florida practices show how to apply CBT, ACT, mindfulness, pain reprocessing approaches, graded activity, and sleep interventions while collaborating with medical providers and staying within the counselor's scope of practice.

This course is designed around the continuing education requirements of the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling but not approved or endorsed by the Board.
